Dealing With Social Media Fatigue

It takes special effort to evade social media these days. Initially seen as an interesting past time, this has now evolved to meet multiple professional and personal needs as well. As social media is becoming so indispensable to different aspects of lives, it correspondingly demands more and more of our time and energy. Keeping this in mind, it may help for us to be more aware of how helpful our social media usage is in terms of time and energy.

  • What prompts me to use social media in different situations? (For instance, when looking for specific information, more out of habit, boredom, or to intentionally keep in touch with friends or family).


  • When do I most use it the most? (It may help to think over situations when you are most tempted to access these sites/apps. For example, during meals, when travelling, during breaks at work, etc.)


  • How do I feel after using it? This question is helpful for you to evaluate whether the time you spend on social media is a positive influence on you or not (For instance - relaxed, mentally stimulated, guilty for having wasted too much time).


  • Are there particular sites/pages that leave me more motivated than others? What about these sites/pages leaves me feeling this way?


After reflecting on these points, you may have some clarity on what prompts you to use this media type, when this happens the most, and how helpful it is to you.

A few suggestions that may help you build on this learning are:



  • Identify the apps/websites that meet your needs (for information, entertainment, etc.) and limit your usage of social media to these, as opposed to registering on multiple sites/apps and being overwhelmed or easily distracted by notifications from them all.


  • Use your knowledge of how a particular app or page on an app influences you to plan when you use a particular type of social media. For instance, if you have the tendency to lose track of time on Facebook, try and use the site when you have large amounts of free time, such as a half an hour lunch break and not during a five-minute work break.


  • You could also access pages of apps or profiles that inspire or motivate you during smaller intervals when you need a break and may be feeling tired or overworked.


  • For the apps or sites that you have identified are more to break boredom, or tend to negatively influence you, try and schedule in other activities that you could do in that time instead. For instance, going for a quick walk around your office or neighbourhood when bored instead of checking social media.


These are a few suggestions on how you can become more aware of how your usage of social media influences you.

So, let us discuss a few things to do on social media during a crisis of such kind. Remember, never before in history, we had the power of the internet and as a corollary, the social media, to move forward even during a global pandemic like Covid-19. Let us make it count then instead of throwing our hands in despair.

In times of crisis, it is usual to get panicky by thinking about the uncertain future. And in most cases, the first instinct is to take hasty decisions without taking every aspect of your business and the crisis into consideration. The result, however, can turn out to be adverse for your business. For example, if you write a post selling your products or services, your target audience is likely to feel surprised or worse, angry. They might think that you are exploiting a situation for business gain. So, the first lesson is not to go on a relentless business drive but understand what your audience might be thinking during such a crisis. Don't go on posting content on your social media profile as if there is no tomorrow. Curate each post by keeping in mind the probable reaction of your audience. There might be a tendency among businesses and brands to share information to their target audience about the pandemic. However, the information must be vetted and taken from reliable sources. Your post should not be seen to be fuelling panic with false or outdated information. Also, ensure proper use of hashtags as wrong usage can lead to issues. For example, using #Covid19 hashtag your brand should not be seen as promoting itself. Rather leave such hashtags for concerned authorities or brands dealing with the crisis. Unless you are an incredibly well-connected Solopreneur who is making a killing and maybe even turning business away, social media will play a role in your branding and marketing strategies. Each platform has its cohort of devoted users and will be a good fit for some businesses, but maybe less so for others.

If the ROI positively impacts sales revenues, then the investment will be worthwhile. Let's take a look at Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Facebook

The most popular social media platform has 2.19 billion users (Statista, 1Q 2018) around the world. There are somewhat more female users than male and the bulk of the age demographic is 18-44 years. Forbes Magazine data indicates that 47% of Americans report that Facebook is their primary influencer when it comes to making purchases.

Facebook often delivers excellent ROI for B2C enterprises (somewhat less for B2B). In-store events and promotions, speaking engagements, your workshops and other events can be announced to Facebook Friends. Content provided in text, photos, or video can be uploaded. You can create groups and build communities, or post a customer survey. Share behind-the-scenes information about your business and what it takes to do what you do and in the process, you'll engage customers, strengthen your brand and build relationships.

Does that sound like too much work and too much sharing? Then create a Fan Page and limit your presence to basic info and a good call to action. Be aware that your presentation of text, photos and other content should be relaxed and welcoming, to create a personal feel (but remember that business is the context).

Instagram

You'll find 1 billion users (Statista, June 2018) from around the world and 80% are outside of the U.S. 95 million posts are shared daily, with many accessed on a mobile device. Approximately 59% of U.S. users are 18-29 years. As of 1Q 2018, there are 300 million daily Instagram Stories users and 30% of users have purchased a product.

Visual storytelling, behind-the-scenes photo montages, social selling, brand awareness, engaging with customers and creating relationships are good uses of Instagram. If you are in public relations or special event/conference planning, then you will find worthwhile B2B use, otherwise it's B2C as far as I can tell.

Photo sharing, brief video trailers and concise text postings that include a hashtag # to better distribute your content are ideal content. Add a link to your profile bio. Decide if you want a public or members-only account. Links cannot be shared.

LinkedIn

Considered the gold standard B2B social media platform, LinkedIn has 500 million members globally (Statista, January 2018). Business ventures large and small, Solopreneurs, corporate and nonprofit leaders, physicians and dentists, any employee who harbors professional aspirations and most college students maintain a profile page. Recruiters use LinkedIn to identify potential candidates for job openings. LinkedIn ProFinder helps Solpreneurs find project work.

LinkedIn is an excellent platform on which to build a community of professional colleagues through your connections and share with them your professional story, successes, highlights and other updates that support your personal brand. My B2B blog posts to my LinkedIn page and my connections receive notice of its arrival. Your connections will also share their stories and there is great opportunity to be in touch and nurture relationships.

Professional portfolios, videos, white papers, newsletters, blogs, infographics, SlideShare presentations and podcasts can be featured on your profile page to add depth to your brand story. Links to articles or studies that might interest your connections can be posted. Recommendations and endorsements let others verify your professional bona fides and you can return the favor.

In the Groups section, you'll engage with colleagues within your industry, or with alumni of your school. Topics of interest are explored through posted questions and group members can respond and in the process get to know one another and possibly, forge relationships that lead to doing business.
