Chippin Away Like Frito-Lay - Environmental Factors

Chippin Away Like Frito-Lay - Environmental Factors

While thinking about what to write for my next post, I sat here finishing my last chip of Doritos "Cool Ranch" and thought that it would be great to find out what makes Doritos so successful. After further research, I was amazed at what I discovered about this unbelievable brand, hence why I've decided to share my findings with everyone. Frito-Lay is a renowned conglomerate in the snacking industry and the owner of the Doritos brand chips. As one of the largest snack food companies in the United States, part of the company's success is attributed to the firm's effective marketing strategies and tactics. Not only is the company involved in domestic and global marketing but also understands the influence that environmental factors could have on the success of any product or service. Environmental factors such as global economic interdependence, trade practices, demographics, physical infrastructure, ethics, culture, technology, and even political systems influencing international relations affects the company's marketing strategies.

To illustrate, here are some examples of internal and external environmental factors that could affect the marketing decisions and strategies for organizations:

Internal Environmental Factors

Organizational resources

Existing product line(s)

Management and Support

Capabilities and philosophies

External Environmental Factors

Technological

Political and legal

Economy

Social and cultural

By having a general understanding of environmental factors, we could now examine how it relates to the marketing decisions at Frito-Lay. As a proud member of the PepsiCo family, the company comprehends the importance of demographics and physical infrastructure and effectively incorporates this into the firm's marketing strategies.

With an abundant supply of resources and a reputable brand name on the line, Frito-Lay has to ensure that all employees remain ethical and socially responsible in daily activities. Not only does the firm require annual re-certification on ethics courses for all employees but also the management team constantly preach ethics and social responsibility. For instance, Frito-Lay has a 'zero landfill' initiative where the company partners with TerraCycle for recycling purposes. Customers are encouraged to collect, and send, used bags of chips to TerraCycle for recycling after consumption. In exchange, they'll receive $0.02 for each bag of chip sent in that'll be donated to a school, or non-profit organization, of their choice. This is a very clever marketing strategy on behalf of Frito-Lay because the company lowers the cost of production for products because of recycling, along with helping the environment and society in parallel.

In addition, the firm also offers exceptional training programs for all stakeholders. The company's website aids with ensuring that stakeholders are kept up-to-date on the latest news affecting products, technology, quality, ethics, marketing, etc. For instance, customers could visit the company's website to find the latest updates on new Frito-Lay products and provide crucial feedback on those new products through customer surveys. This in turn would enable the company to review the market research data obtained and adjust the company's marketing strategies accordingly. These are just some examples showcasing how Frito-Lay continues to understand how internal environmental factors could affect the company's marketing strategies and image. Therefore, the firm continues to demonstrate a strong organizational culture acting ethically and socially responsible in an effort to improve on products, services, training, society, and the environment.

Frito-Lay has also leveraged the external environmental factors listed above to provide the firm with a competitive advantage. From a technological standpoint, Frito-Lay has incorporated the latest technologies to aid with online marketing and promotions for products offered. For instance, the company's website is filled with flash media and other marketing tactics that aid in highlighting the delectableness of the variety of snacks offered at Frito-Lay. The website allows customers to navigate to any product of choice in an effort to gain more details about that particular product prior to purchase. Details such as calories, price, and even promotions relating to those goods are listed daily to consumers online. In addition, Frito-Lay also uses technology to strengthen the company's brand name. By using renewable energy, such as bio-fuels, solar power, recycled heat and steam from plants, the company is estimating that it'll use 45% less energy per chip bag by 2017.

Personally, what I found most interesting is the company's effective understanding of social, demographics, and cultural environmental factors and using the market research data obtained to produce certain products tailored for specific target markets. For example, Frito-Lay conducted market research on the external environmental factors listed above and determined that the Japanese people had a distinct taste. To please this specific target market, Frito-Lay began producing a variety of different flavored Doritos corn chips specifically for Japan. Flavors, such as coconut curry, wasabi mayo, tuna mayo, and even sausage flavored Dorito chips.

To me, this is very smart on behalf of Frito-Lay, especially with global economic interdependence and trade because organizations could reach new target markets in an effort to promote and sell their products to different end-users. As we're aware, international trade creates opportunities for businesses and exposes consumers to products and services that may not be available in their own country. International trade also provides consumers with more options in terms of price and the quality of goods offered because of multiple producers. With international trade, companies such as Frito-Lay, have a competitive advantage because products or services are offered globally. Therefore, the increase in consumer demand could assist the firm because the cost of production is lowered as a result of economies of scale.

Although I have consumed Frito-Lay products for decades, I've never done the research to realize the company's uncanny ability to analyze internal and external environmental factors and create marketing strategies and products tailored to customer needs. Whether satisfying the marketing mix domestically or internationally, Frito-Lay ensures that proper market research is conducted that takes into account environmental factors such as culture, ethics, technology, physical infrastructure, demographics, and the legal environment. Doing so would enable the firm to continue improving on products offered because of the market research data obtained.

David Ogilvy, an advertising guru, wisely stated to "never stop testing, and your advertising will never stop improving." Frito-Lay continues to test markets in an effort to produce products tailored for specific cultural tastes and preferences. This would enable the firm to satisfy current markets, along with reaching new global markets, hence the company's astronomical success.

Continue to chip away Frito-Lay - Bravo!

An Essay on Environmental Terrorism

An Essay on Environmental Terrorism

All animals, and all species of life, deserve the right-of-life and to live. But in saying that, species, even us, can depend on others as food. The below must be read bearing this in mind.

For the human species to live in harmony with other species, and as the caretaker-species of this planet, we will inevitably and eventually draw up an internationally recognized charter-of-rights for sentient and non-sentient life. To begin with, such a charter would be adopted country by country. But eventually all nations will accept it.

This charter would have for some species the same rights that humans grant each other. Some countries of Earth already have laws based on such rights in place. Most countries have at least anti-cruelty laws. But the laws that specifically enable all life to survive in harmony, free from environmental terrorism, are not yet drawn up.

People violating those yet-to-be-introduced laws in the future will likely be treated accordingly, as we might expect. But right now such laws are culturally based and varied. For example, elephant poachers in Africa can get an extreme death-in-the-field sentence by environmental law enforcers. By contrast, international law is different. Such laws need to be globally streamlined. And, by rational thinking, it is foreseeable that such environmental laws might one day be expected to take into consideration the activities of chemical companies, weapons manufacturers, environmental polluters, loggers and a lot more. Such is foreseeable.

How far these laws reach will depend on the severity of the situation, and how people act now. But it is already severe.

A future exists, whereby hunters, and some individuals, will be labeled as environmental terrorists. Their actions speak loudly of what they are doing. They will fit the label. But that label would really be for a representative panel of the United Nations, or some other body, to decide. Many hunters might disagree, but an act of terror is not defined as being perpetrated solely upon the human species. And the definition of mass murder does not have to be restrained only to people. The abnormal unholy destructive urge that hunters and some individuals display by killing other species will one day be recognized for what it truly is.

And such a thinking panel or body as above, which is given charge to salvage this planet's environment, will also introduce retroactive laws. This is probably unavoidable. We already have the example of retroactive laws in place for sex predators.

The ungodly urge to destroy other life is an urge that must be curtailed, no matter the victim's age, gender, race or species. In most countries the unnatural act of buggery, sex slavery and a lot more, is already against the law, regardless of species. So is cruelty. Naming interspecies murder for what it is, is simply an extension of existing thought and law.

It is further seeable, that such retroactive laws could strip those who have inherited wealth, made from harming other species. It is doubted that this will be soon, but it will happen one day.

If our world is damaged to such a critical degree by past unlabeled environmental-criminals, it might be that their heirs are used to extract the planet out of the trap we are sliding into.

For example, who will pay the 350 billion dollars needed to clean up the Pacific Ocean of plastic? The cost has to be paid for in part at least, by those who profited from the ocean's destruction. There has to be the general public, but also, it has to be the companies and their officers who profited by it. Likely, benefiting heirs will be included.

Probably, in the future it will be the heirs of those profiting from environmental destruction who are made to pay.

Now, what is going to happen here in the future is especially interesting. Will anti-environmental-terrorism laws allow enforcement agencies to pursue environmental criminals unimpeded across international boundaries? Most likely those laws will, one day. Some forward thinking countries already have cross-border laws in place, which will be invoked. They can already do this, regardless of other nations objecting. Others will follow suit.

And for those who object to the above, after a little investigation, they will undoubtedly be known for who they are.

All this could be forty years away, but it is definitely foreseeable. Environmental terrorism has to be dealt with.

Top 10 2Pac / Tupac Albums - DMA's Top 10 Show

Top 10 2Pac / Tupac Albums - DMA's Top 10 Show

The Top 10 2Pac / Tupac albums as selected by DJ Marc Antomattei.

Hello welcome to the second episode of "DJ Marc Antomattei's Top 10 Show" (DMA's Top 10). In this show and each subsequent episode I am going to introduce you to a person (musician, singer, producer, or DJ) or theme (music genre or category) and give you a top 10 list as selected by me and add some personal commentary to the selection. I hope you enjoy and I also hope it's educational to you as well.

In this episode I introduce you to the music of New York rapper 2Pac who we all know defected to the west coast and led the highly heated and deadly, west vs. east rivalry.

Why I chose "Me Against The World" as my number #1. The consistency, the sheer amount of hit songs with little room for filler music. The variety of content (subject matter) is expansive. Just so many great songs. It's as simple as that.

"Me Against The World, So Many Tears, Temptations, Young Niggaz", Dear Mama, It Ain't Easy, Can U Get Away, Death Around The Corner"

Why I chose "All Eyez On Me" as my number #2. It was a real contender for number #1 and I considered it greatly. Ultimately I came to the realization that even though had just a few more hit songs than "Me Against The World". It took 2-disc of 27 tracks to accomplish what "Me Against The World" did with 1 disc of 15 songs. Either way you look at it, had "Me Against The World" been 2-disc or had "All Eyez On Me" only been just 1-disc, "Me Against The World" is the tighter album of the two literally and metaphorically.

Interconnected Environmental Problems

Interconnected Environmental Problems

A number of environmental problems are continuing as a major part of our concern. Habitat destruction and fragmentation, biodiversity loss, stratospheric ozone depletion, global climate change, herbicides, pesticides, pollution of surface- and ground-water, acid deposition, oil spills, and thermal pollution are direct environmental problems. Human population growth, unsustainable consumerism, urbanization, international conflicts, and inequities in the distribution of wealth are indirect environmental problems. All such problems are presently being viewed in a totality, to ameliorate the said problems, and to ensure the future of life on earth. Expansion of chemical industries, during and after World War II, has aggravated such problems. "Silent Spring" written by Rachel Carson awakened about pollution threats to living species. Environmentalism has become accepted in the public Agenda since the first National Earth Day in 1970. The 1970s were the decade of environment.Between the 1980s and 1990s, environmental issues were pushed into the political background, and now coming to the forefront as human abuse of the earth is continuing. Emphasis on preventive measures rather than curative measures on environmental problems is believed to contribute a lot.

Diversity in living forms occurs due to changes in their genetic make up, inheritance of changes, and operation of natural selection. Interaction between environment, genetic variation, and natural selection leads to evolution. Origin of new species is the result of evolution. Existing biodiversity is the result of evolution, and extinction. Evolution and extinction are make, and breake system in nature. Diversity of species and the complex interrelationships that sustain them are encompassed by the term biodiversity. The term "Biological Diversity" was coined by Thomas Lovejoy in the year 1980. E. O. Wilson applied the term "Biodiversity" in 1986. The 1992 United Nations Earth Summit held at Rio de Janeiro defined biodiversity as "the variability among living organisms from all sources, including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part: this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems".

Brown, an administrator of UNDP has recently argued that biodiversity is far from being optional or a luxury; rather a key development issue that frequently provides the welfare system for poor people and communities. Most of the world's biodiversity exist in the economically poorest countries, which offer opportunities to the poor to enhance their income by exploiting the biodiversity resource. According to Brown, our future programmme should focus on "biodiversity for development", not biodiversity or development.

Increasing population degrades natural habitat in a number of ways. An assessment of wildlife habitat loss in tropical Asia reported that India had already lost about 80% of its natural habitat. Biological diversity has become a topic of international convention, and is no longer the private domain of biologists. The complexity on this planet lies in the dynamics of the "biodiversity/biosphere" system. The concept of Sustainable development has been emerged for conserving the natural and biological resources. Understanding biodiversity necessitates the knowledge of taxonomy, evolution, genetics, behavioral biology, economics, ecology, environmental science, political science, and sociology. In fact, economy and ecology intersect in a 3 fold system of biodiversity, biosphere, and human society.

Evolution of the diversity of life is associated with interaction involving biosphere, human society, and climate. In both Rio and Johannesburg, economic and social development of humanity was emphasized, as they depend on long-term environmental health. Central role of biodiversity in sustainable development and in eradication of poverty was recognized at Johannesburg. World Commission on Environment and Development report states that "If needs are to be met on a sustainable basis, the Earth's natural resource base must be conserved and enhanced". Developing countries are plagued with social inequalities with features, including poverty, inadequate social amenities, high unemployment rates, and lack of proper infrastructure. These countries base their development policy on the paradigm set by the market economy. The pursuit of developmental objectives by such countries comes into conflict with environmental protection.Poverty and present trends of development leads to environmental degradation. The World Bank has asserted that the poor are both victims and perpetuators of environmental abuse. The World Bank has claimed that up to 1991, more than 1500 environmental components were added to power, transportation, industry and agriculture projects, with a few being implemented to improve soil conservation, to manage forests and rangelands, to prevent desertification, to protect biological diversity, and conserve water resources and fisheries. However, an interdisciplinary approach can help in the conservation of biodiversity along with the environmental resources, and essentially with involvement of the people.

Neon vs LED Displays and Their Environmental Impact

Neon vs LED Displays and Their Environmental Impact

On the Las Vegas strip itself, the one place in the world most famous for its neon lights, many are switching over to LED displays over neon. In fact, the neon signs that are being replaced with their LED counterparts can now be found being preserved in neon museums.

LED is much more efficient than neon in many ways. First, and most obviously, it uses less energy than neon. LED signs use only 10 watts of electricity, while neon signs can use up to ten times that amount. In addition, neon signs need to have their gas replaced after about a decade, which can be expensive along with other maintenance costs. On the other hand, LEDs are known to last much longer than other forms of lighting.

For neon signs, key ingredients such as argon and mercury are toxic in themselves. Any damage to the signs can cause these poisonous gases to leak into the environment and the companies that own these signs may even be held responsible for the damage that they cause.

Finally, in today's fast-paced hustle and bustle, LED displays are vastly more practical than neon signs. Instead of having to change the sign manually with every new advertisement while producing more waste materials in the process, LED signs can be programmed to change on the go. They can even make use of scheduling software to display different advertisements which cater to the different crowds that pass by at different times of day, or different days of the week.

There's no contest when it comes to LED vs. neon where the environment is concerned. LED is the way to go.

The Role Of Animals In Organic Farming

The Role Of Animals In Organic Farming

Farm animals are an important an integrated part of most organic farms. They make valuable contributions to the productivity and sustainability of organic agricultural systems. In addition to this strong economic bond between humans and animals in organic farming, there also is a moral (and sometimes emotional) bond to animals as sentient and fellow beings on this planet. This imposes a responsibility on humans for the welfare of farm animals. However, the development of organic animal husbandry has been slower than the organic plant production. There are several reasons for this, historical and philosophical as well as the fact that research on animal production often is more expensive and difficult to carry out compared to crop research. However, organic animal research has increased considerably in several European countries lately and resulting from this, improved efficiency and productivity can be expected in organic animal production, as well as better animal welfare.

There is a big interest in organic farming in Europe, both among politicians, consumers and farmers. Organic agriculture is subsidized by the EU, and the Commission is currently working on an Action Plan for organic food and agriculture. Animals are an important part of most organic farms and research to develop better organic systems is now performed in many European countries. Thus we can expect organic animal production to increase during the years to come. At the same time there are challenges and dilemmas that the organic movement and organic farmers must face and solve to improve animal production and to maintain credibility and trust among consumers, for example in relation to animal welfare.

In organic farming, agriculture is often referred to as an agroecosystem. An agroecosystem is a community of plants and animal interaction with their physical and chemical environments that have been modified by people to produce feed, fibers and other products for human consumption and processing. The goal of organic farming is to design a quilt of agroecosystems within a landscape unit, each mimicking the structure and function of local, natural ecosystems, thus acquiring their resilience and sustainability. Ideally, the organic farmer manipulates the natural ecosystem to achieve sustainable production, using an understanding of ecological relationships while trying to minimize the use of external inputs and harm to the environment.

Although it is possible to create agroecosystems without farm animal, animal provide substantial advantages for system productivity and sustainability. For example, farm animal have an important role in processing biomass and recycling nutrients. Organic farming systems with herbivores are generally more productive than those without them. The animals can fill trophic niches that otherwise would not be utilized, for example marginal lands otherwise unsuitable for agriculture. However, in order to create sustainable agroecosystems, the animal component must meet certain requirements:-

1. The selection of species and breeds must be adapted to crop production suitable for the area, to available resources on the farm or in the region, and to local agro-climatic conditions.

2. The number of animals must be balanced in relation to the possible crop production and available resources.

3. Rearing systems must be designed to avoid harming the environment and to minimize the use of fossil energy.

Ruminants, such as cattle and sheep, have a particularly important role in agroecosystems since they process leguminous forage plants. These are the backbone of organic crop production because of their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen. To obtain sufficient nitrogen in an organic crop rotation, about one-third of the crops should be legumes. In practice this means that organic animal production must be based on ruminants (and that these are fed like ruminants). In contrast, monogastric animal, such as pig and poultry, require high quality protein in their diets. These animals can be considered as competing with humans for food, at least to the extent they use protein sources suitable for direct human consumption. Thus, it is sometimes argued that monogastric animals should be considered marginal in organic farming, primarily to be fed on agricultural wastes. They also can contribute to the agroecosystem by producing useful services, such as biological weed or pest control.

Development approaches for organic animal production in developing countries has to be based on realistic and practical situations. First, one must recognize the limitation and complexities of export market for animal products, while there exists greater market opportunities for organic animal products locally, for instance indigenous chicken meat and eggs. Practical approaches for organic farming should be based on and developed from locally existing animal production systems which already have close resemblance to prescribed organic practices, such as those mentioned earlier for ruminant and indigenous chicken production. The local standards and guidelines for organic animal farming ought to be initially considered and developed from such existing animal husbandry practices. Further development of such standards will be a continuous process based on practical experiences gained from production, processing, and marketing of the resulted organic animal products.

The Success of the promotion of organic animal farming at national level will depend on many important factors including government policies and legislative supports, socio-economic infrastructure, farm training and extension as well as other technical supports.

Farm Safety - Dangers of Pesticides

Farm Safety - Dangers of Pesticides

The use of pesticides is a major issue in farm safety, for a number of different reasons. Pesticides are used widely in all types of agricultural settings, most mostly farms, orchards, forests, nurseries and greenhouses.

Farms use pesticides on a different number of crops, and are a necessary part of most types of modern-day farming. Orchards use pesticides as a way of preserving and treating fruit, an essential part of its long life.

Nurseries and greenhouses also use pesticides widely, many different plants need to be protected against different types of insects and bugs, and pesticides are often the only way to do it

The use of pesticides raises special concerns in terms of health and safety, both for the people who use pesticides, and anyone who may come into contact with any land plants or vegetable that has been sprayed with pesticides.

Pesticides vary in terms of their severity, but they should be thought of as potentially dangerous chemicals, and treated with the utmost caution. Depending upon where the farm or agricultural practice is located, there will be different statutes that regulate the use of pesticides,.

There are a number of common features that relate to how pesticides should be used, and what is considered best practice in terms of advice and guidance for people who are responsible for their usage.

The use of pesticides is not simply someone spraying them onto some plant or tree, the use of pesticides usually involves a number of different people who handle pesticide at different times.

Such handling can include transport pesticides, mixing of them, the loading onto a particular vehicle or sprayer and in the application of the test site to the relevant area.

Best practice indicates a number of minimum standards should apply. Any business using pesticides should have a clear policy concerning all the areas of their preparation and usage. Such a policy should be clearly written out and posted at all relevant points where pesticides are likely to be handled.

In addition, the pesticide policy should be already conveyed all people in the formal business who may either use pesticides, or come into contact with any type of produce that has had pesticide sprayed on them.

In addition to a written policy, all staff in the business should have some type of formal pesticide training. This should cover the different types of pesticides likely to be used in business, the correct way to handle and apply them and most importantly, what do in the event of an emergency either by ingestion or any other way someone has come into unsafe contact with them.

Aside from the training, which should be done as a formal process and on a regular basis, there should be pesticide safety posters put up throughout the physical location of the business reinforcing the most important point made during the pesticide training course.

Many businesses that use pesticides have some type of decontamination facilities, and any such site should be carefully thought through and workers in the business thoroughly appraised of how it works.

It is widely understood that many farms and agricultural businesses are located in rural settings, in places that would take emergency services a long time to get to.

With pesticides, it is important to have posters up giving detailed information of what do the event of an emergency. There are normally public health information sites which can give specialist advice on the ingestion or absorption of poisons, which may well, pesticides. If there is such a national or local phone number should be listed on the poster as well.

Best practice would also have small cards with this telephone number that could be displayed or kept in machinery such as tractors are in areas of land where no posters could be put up.
