All cell phones, once powered on, emit certain amounts of electromagnetic radiation in the microwave radio frequency range. During the past 15 years or so, when mobile phone use has become phenomenally prevalent worldwide, the effects of this radiation on human health has come under intense study and has been the subject of numerous heated debates. "The latency between exposure and brain cancer could be 20 or 30 years," observes Professor Devra Davis, at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. By using cellular devices without any clear understanding of the dangers, "we are basically treating ourselves like lab rats in an experiment without any controls"
To mitigate potential cell phone dangers, experts recommend certain safe practices in using wireless devices. Some of the most common recommendations are: Keep your cellular phone away from your body, text more and talk less, use headset or speakerphone function, use your land line, turn off your mobile phone while charging, keep cell phones away from children, and purchase or use phones that have been certified or tested to emit the least amount of radiation.
It is with the intention of educating the public about the dangers of mobile phone radiation that the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has conducted an exhaustive study, covering over a thousand cell phone models in the market, detailing the amount of radiation that each mobile phone emits. The EWG is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 1993 by Ken Cook and Richard Wiles, that aims to "use the power of public information to protect public health and the environment."

As pointed out by the CTIA, the wireless industry's lobbying group, there is yet no conclusive and fully substantiated study about cell phone dangers. However, it is no secret that government agencies in some countries have started to post warnings and direct cell phone manufacturers to clearly indicate the amount of radiation that each model they sell to the public actually emits.
Until we're finally able to bridge that gap in our knowledge on the dangers of cell phone radiation, we can only take precautionary measures to protect ourselves. One important way to protect our health, is by buying or purchasing mobile phone models that have the least amount of radiation.

Statistics show that that approximately two-thirds of U.S. children between the ages of 10 and 19 have cell phones. In other parts of the world, the rate is even higher. In Japan, for instance, more than 80% of high school students and 25% of junior high school students had cell phones. Great Britain and Scandinavia also have high rates of children with cell phones. These other countries are where many disturbing statistics are coming from.
The Japanese Cabinet Office surveyed teenagers with cell phones and found 37% of teenage males and 30% of teenage females had accessed dating sites. These sites had led to some girls having unwanted sexual relations with men that they met through these sites.
Another danger with the newer cell phones is the ability to share photos and videos taken with a cell phone which can mean that just by pushing the wrong buttons, your child's picture, phone number, and e-mail address can be sent to the wrong person. You can also download pictures from a cell phone and place them on the World Wide Web for everyone to see. That is why some schools have banned cell phones from restricted areas such as locker rooms to prevent inappropriate pictures being taken. As well as pictures that your child may be sending from their cell phone, they are also able to view inappropriate material away from home and you may know nothing about it.
Another problem with cell phones is that they are phones. As well as sending kids pictures, sexual predators can also contact them through their cell phone number to arrange a meeting when the kids are outside their parent's control. Most cell phones have caller ID, which means the minute that your child contacts this person, the person has their cell phone number.
As well as sexual predators, bullies are also using cell phones to harass other children. This has become a major problem in Great Britain, where 16% of young people say that they've received threatening text messages as well as 7% that say that they have been harassed in chat-rooms. Another 4% claimed to be bullied by e-mail. If your child is the victim of such harassment, check with your wireless provider about getting the phone number changed.
Another problem with cell phones is that these phones are equipped with geo location systems so that dispatchers at 911 can pinpoint the phone's location in case of an emergency. While this tracking system is supposed to be secure, it is not infallible. If the wrong person has the know-how, he can track your child wherever they are.
There are several measures that you can take to protect your child. First you should discuss the situation with them, explain that they should never text messages to anyone that they do not know personally. If they still persist in texting everyone, trade their present plan for a prepaid one with a limited amount of minutes. With fewer minutes, your child will have to decide to talk on the phone or to text. Since texting is usually more expensive, your child will probably go back to just talking on the cell phone, which is what you had originally planned for them to do in the first place.

Have you ever wondered how to track a cell phone? Perhaps you worry that someone may be tracking your mobile. With the advancements and large strides in cellular technology, we already know we are being tracked. Obviously a mobile phone company knows exactly where you are at all times. Well, at least they know where your cellphone is. Apple, Inc was scrutinized by the media for tracking and keeping a record of all iPhone users. A GPS or GPRS can easily track any mobile. Phone applications have reached the technological point where GPS tracks your every move. Your phone connects directly to the satellite and beams back to you your location. If you want to track a cellular device, simply install the software. The software is meant to track a cell phone that has been lost or stolen. If you track someone else's mobile, it may be illegal. At the very least, most would call it unethical. (But law enforcers do that, sometimes even crossing the lines.)
If you want to track a cellular phone, first of all you will need to buy one with GPS tracker enabled. About 80% of phones on the market are enabled. You will need to find a cellphone service provider that allows for tracking. Specific GPS tracking plans exist, primarily intended for parents and employers that can help you easily learn how to track a cell phone location from your own wireless phone or PC.
You can also track cells online. These cell phone tracker programs are Sprint/Nextel's Mobile Locator, Verizon's Family Locator and AT&T's Family Map. Cell tracker services generally cost about $10-$15 per month, nothing to sneeze at when it's added to all the other costs of a mobile phone plan. Using a tracker program to track a mobile can provide peace of mind in the form of interactive, real-time location maps on your phone or online.
The program Google Latitude uses a tracker mapping program that uses cellphone towers to locate users who have approved that you can trace them. Other similar map-based mobile phone locator apps (most of which rely on GPS cell phone tracking) include Mologogo, Buddyway and Instamapper.
Before you start tracking a cellphone with GPS or a software program, you should consider the consequences. Whether you learn how to track your cellphone, or someone else's phone, by accessing your phone's location, you're allowing others to access your phone's whereabouts, too. You should therefore practice caution when using any type of cell phone tracker. Here's what to look out for when tracking a phone.
Be aware of the risks of trying to track a mobile phone. As Jeschke of EFF points out: "Location data from cell phone tracking does not disappear when you're done with it." In fact, she says mobile device location tracking can even be subpoenaed and used in divorce or custody hearings. She adds that it's not hard to imagine that cell phone locator services like GPS tracking and other tracking programs could be misused. For example, an abusive spouse may try to find out what domestic violence shelter his partner is in by tracking her phone. To protect against unwanted invasions of privacy, and prevent people from tracking your cellphone, Jeschke advises turning off the location services on your phone unless you absolutely need them.

In the United Kingdom, a law has just been passed which forbids drivers to use mobile phones whilst on the move. In fact, this is not quite true as the law has been around for some considerable time. Yet the authorities are cracking down on the use of mobile phones on the move and making it a more serious offense.
Up until February 1st, using a mobile phone on the move could lead to a fine of approximately $60. This was hardly a deterrent and people could be seen at all times using the telephone. There have been a number of instances when pedestrians have been killed because of drivers using mobile phones and losing control of their vehicles. The 60-dollar fine was not much of a deterrent for most people. Therefore, on the 1st of February the fine has been increased to $120 together with three points endorsement on the driving license.
This is thought to be able to produce a situation where people will think twice before using a mobile phone. Yet whether this will prove to be useful overall is debatable. The mobile phone has become an essential item for use at all times of the day and even at night.
The days are long past when the only way we could communicate with other people was if we were at home and near our land line phones. Now the mobile phone is useful for general communication and for more "important" communications involving the safety of children, loved ones, and relatives.
