A massive amount of invisible data is streamed on daily basis through cellular networks. Data can be of several types depending on the source and type, and that is why all types of industries rely on data so much.

Data science is a multidisciplinary field, combining many subjects like mathematics, statistics, computer science, and business management together. It combines various tools and techniques together, which are created for analytics purpose only. From data collection to machine learning and presentation of results to the management every step is to find meaning insights from the given data. For all these tools to work one need to have historical and present dated data to work upon. And all this data can be collected from different sources like governmental data sets or from sensors located near farms and machines. Some rich sources of data are:

Gps sensors based tractors and ploughers

Climatic and weather predictions

Fertilizer requirement data

Pest and weed infestation data

Sensors based data from the farms

Analysis of these data can be helpful to not only farmers but also insurance companies, banks, government, traders, seed and fertilizer manufacturers etc.

Big data helps in precision farming, which is also called satellite farming; it works on the basis of observation and the measurement from various sources. The primary objective is to use resources effectively and make informed decisions. All this is done keeping temperature, topography, soil fertility, salinity, water availability, chemical resources, moisture content etc.

SMART FARMING

The major application of data science in agriculture is smart farming where analytics technology is used. It helps to overcome shortfalls of farming and control supply chain, gives predictive insights, delivers real-time decisions and design business models. It involves management information systems specialized for:

Community Supported Agriculture: A Win/Win Situation

This fall our family signed up with a local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm. I am thrilled as this is something I have longed to do for some time.

In the last 20 years CSA's have become very popular. CSA's provide an excellent way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Participating in CSA farming is simple: a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the general public. Generally, a "share" consists of a medium size box of vegetables but other products may be included as well such as fruits, eggs, milk, cheese, honey and/or maple syrup. Consumers who want to partake simply purchase a share (sometimes referred to as a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive a box, bag or basket of seasonal produce. While this practice itself is simple, the impact has been monument us. Thousands of families have CSAs throughout the country. In many areas, there is a more of a demand than there are CSAs to fill it. Some CSAs are finding themselves resorting to waiting lists. It has been estimated that currently the United States alone is home to over 4,000 CSA farms.

Advantages for Consumers

The advantages for consumers are numerous!

Uber-fresh fruit and veggies packed full of rich vitamins and nutrients

Exposure to new vegetables, new products and new recipes

Farm visits

Children and adults alike suddenly preferring "their" farms products, even veggies previously undiscovered

Developing a relationship with your local farmer

Educational aspects regarding food, growing and a working farm just to name a few points.

No need to have the space for a garden in order to enjoy fresh produce

No experience necessary

Knowing exactly where your food comes from

Teaching he kids were your food comes from and how to help produce it

Lower prices

A wide variety of produce

The ability to request something extra or not to receive something else

Extra produce to freeze and can, thereby redoing the grocery bill even after the season.

Advantages for Farmers

The advantages for farmers who choose to offer CSA shares are abundant.

Allowed to focus on marketing the food early in the year long before the long days in the field begin

Receive payment early in the season which allows for better planning and cash flow

Supporting local economies

Shared risk regarding each crop's yield

An opportunity to get to know the people who they feed

The joy of participating in sustainable farming/harvesting while still making a living

The ability to teach others about where their food comes from.

Variations

It is important to note that each farm is slightly different. Some farms utilize a "mix and match" or "market-style" CSA. Here, consumers would not simply be picking up a standard box each week; they instead load their own boxes with a certain amount of personal discretion. The farmer lays out baskets of each week's ripened vegetables. On some farms, the consumers are asked to take a prescribed amount and leave behaving what their families do not care for. Many times this extra produce is sold at farmers markets, roadside stands, or donated to local food banks. At other farms the members have a wider choice to opt for what pleases their family, often within specific limitations (I.e. "one basket of raspberries per share, please"). Furthermore, while some farmers sell shares for a whole year at a time, other's offers 10 week, or 25 week intervals. Some farmers require members to complete a certain number of "work" hours while others do not require this at all. Nearly all farmers offer farm pick up (which in my opinion is the fun part of the CSA experience), some also offer drop off/pick up locations and/or home delivery.

Remember that CSAs are not solely about vegetables. Many have options for shareholders to buy eggs, homemade bread, meat, cheese, fruit, flowers, honey, maple syrup and other farm products as well as their vegetables. In some areas farmers are coming together to offer their products together. For example one CSA vegetable and honey farm may allow another chicken farmer to use their CSA as a drop off point thereby allowing CSA members to purchase chickens when they come to pick up their share. Other farms are streamlining their farm into one specific area only. Still other non-farming third parties are setting up CSA-like businesses, where they sell boxes of local food to their members only and are essentially middle men.

Shared Risk

One of the most important concepts of the CSA arraignment is the premise of shared risk. When CSAs first began this notion of "we're all in it together" was critical. If the season allowed for apples to be rampant, then the families began not only using the apples as fresh produce but also putting some up for winter; freezing for pies and crisps, juicing, and making homemade apple sauce. If a hail storm depleted all the tomatoes, well, those families could expect very little spaghetti that year. This concept remains. While farmers often have other avenues of marketing their produce through farmers markets, wholesale, and industrial accounts, many still require CSA members to sign a policy indicating that they agree to accept without complaint whatever the farm is able to produce.

This feeling of shared risk interestingly creates a sense of community among members and between members and the farmer. Together, all the members and the hardworking farmers cheer on the green peppers and watch the onions anxiously. They are excited together, concerned together and triumphant together. Most CSA farmers report feeling a significant responsibility to their members. When specific crops are scant, they ensure that the CSA members have first dibs.

At times however, things do wrong. Hideously, horribly wrong. Sometimes it is understandable; a wretched divorce, sudden death or family tragedy. Othertimes, it may be a renegade, irresponsible farmer or a newbie over his head. With that said there are hundreds of farmers who take pride in their land and farm, you find joy in feeding the member families and who have a grand reputation. There are a few noteworthy tips to avoid any issues. When searching for your new CSA remember:

Ask around for recommendations.

Find an established, reputable CSA

Ensure that all produce being offered is actually from that farm. (Occasionally, new farmers get odd, desperate ideas and bring in produce and "resell").

Check contract for hidden fees and to ensure you are comfortable with all fees.

Visit the farm and see for yourself how the produce is grown, how the animals are kept and the land is treated. Nothing else can be as rewarding or affirming.

Other critical tips for potential CSA members:

Do not expect all your produce to come from your CSA. While your share will be plenty of produce, it will not be enough. Most CSAs do not provide fruit, and those that do, do so in specific quantities. Furthermore, stables will still need to be bought. Inquire with your farmer before running out the market. Again.

If you are unfamiliar with eating seasonally, do some research! It will be shocking that the grocery store has tomatoes but yet they don't ripen until August! Who knew?

Always inquire about types of produce expected as well as quantities.

If you are planning on freezing and/or canning for winter, inquire with your farmer. Many times he/she will have a list of individuals seeking extra produce on top of their CSA order.

Always, always, always remember, refer to and obey all policies.

Always ask the farmer for references. If they have plenty of good reports, you are in safe hands.

Joining a CSA can be a rewarding, healthy choice for your family but also for the Earth as well. If you are concerned with Environmental issues, are a proponent for "going local", are interested in becoming a "localvoire" or just don't have a green thumb yourself, check into joining a CSA- fresh, local, healthy produce without all the work!

Some of the major farm products are crops like - rice, wheat, sugarcane, cotton, jute, tea, coffee and rubber - which are produced in most parts of the world.

In countries that export surplus farm output, agriculture is all the more significant, and the agricultural production is fairly high. As the farmer gets a good profit, his financial position, especially in developed countries, is better than many other entrepreneurs. He is now able to purchase the latest machinery, use latest techniques of farming, buy new and improved hybrid varieties of seeds, and use the best fertilizers to increase productivity.

Nowadays, there are improvements in wholesale marketing as well as transportation of farm products. The use of refrigeration systems and efficient rail transport has made possible the safe delivery of perishable farm products like dairy products, vegetables, and fruits. With barely 4% of total population of United States engaged in agriculture, they have huge exportable surplus.

Agriculture is not just limited to crop cultivation, dairy farming has become an indispensable part of the agricultural process. Dairy farming is the practice of farming in which cattle are kept for milk and milk products. Oftentimes, poultry is also included. In fact, the scope of agriculture has widened, with interrelated sectors over-lapping one another; and in the present scenario, each of these sectors is as important as any other!

With its varied allied sectors, agriculture is undeniably the largest source of revenue for millions across the length and breadth of India. Contributing a momentous figure to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the nation, sustainable agriculture that offers rural occupation and environmentally sustainable expertise, agriculture is essential for a comprehensive development of a nation. Did you know that over the years the Indian agriculture sector has witnessed a green revolution, a white revolution, a yellow revolution and a blue revolution? Here's how each era is defined:

Green Revolution: The period when agriculture in India increased its yields due to improved agronomic technology.

White Revolution: Operation Flood, the world's largest agricultural development program by Verghese Kurien

Yellow Revolution: The growth, development and adoption of new varieties of oilseeds and complementary technologies.

Blue Revolution: Management of water resources that steered humanity to achieve drinking water and crop irrigation security.

Agriculture, India's principal private-sector enterprise engages over 119 million farmers and an additional 144 million landless laborers. In India according to the saying, "Uttam kheti, Madhyam vyapar, Kanishtha naukri" agriculture is even deemed to be the most reputable industry. The above saying implies - supreme is farming, business is medium and servitude is the least desirable.

Agriculture as a business: Is it OR Is it not?

Firstly, cultivation is the only kind of business around the world which has both production and is accompanied by variable cost risks. Here are some examples why we made the above statement. A businessman who makes steel might bump into problems like worker & transporters strikes, instability in prices, variation of raw material, natural calamities etc. Yet these disturbances are incidents that happen once in a blue moon.

Conversely for a farmer, production hazards are almost an everyday occurrence. There may be no rains during the sowing season or for the duration of germination and growth periods. Furthermore pest attacks, hailstorms during crop maturity and enormously fluctuating price crashes can wreak havoc to the lives of farmers. These factors are the ones that make both production and price risks commercially unviable for farmers.

Secondly, agriculture is the lone kind of industry wherein you purchase everything retail and sell everything wholesale. If you are an e-commerce giant, you buy wholesale, but sell retail. Farmers are the only bunch who pay in retail for everything, no matter what the product is... from tractors to small machinery and seeds. But, they are obligated to trade their produce at wholesale prices.

The best way to get around this prejudice is to have farmer-producer cooperatives that will obtain all the requirements for the farmers... seeds, agricultural products, fertilizers etc from producers in bulk and make them obtainable by farmers at indiscriminate rates. However, the sad reality is that in a country like India where the middleman plays a huge role, such organizations are rare.

The time will soon come may be when our farmers will begin demanding ways to get around certain laws that given them and bring about another revolution.

With more and more New Yorkers clamoring for the freshest greens green can buy, CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) pickups are sprouting up around the five boroughs. Southside CSA is one of the trend's latest offshoots opening just this year and serving the Greenpoint and Williamsburg areas of Brooklyn.

Just as with the NYC Greenmarkets, the ubiquitous citywide farmer's market, CSA shares-veggies, fruits, eggs, and wine-hail from Hudson Valley farmlands. However, there is one key distinction between the systems.

"You don't get to choose your produce, but you're sharing in the farmer's bounty," said CSA core group member, Esther Giangrande. Ms. Giangrande teamed up with the other founding group members through the Greenpoint-Williamsburg CSA low-income fundraising committee. She had been using the CSA's current pickup location, Bridget Urban Wine Bar in Williamsburg, as a venue for fundraisers to benefit Greenpoint Soup Kitchen.

The way a CSA works is that before the harvest season begins, (for Southside CSA's produce, the season runs for 20 weeks, from June 22 through November 2), members decide whether they would like to purchase a full share or half share. All CSAs are based on a similar concept. Share prices are literally seed money for the farmer, based on what is needed to grow the crops promised for the season. For greens only, full shares cost $400 per season, and members pick up their weekly veggie supply every Monday at night Bridget. With half-shares, which cost $200, the pick-up is only every other week. Over the course of the 20 weeks however, the different shares amount to $20 worth per week, roughly the amount that the farmer would receive at market for his goods. Because full shares are so large, it is not uncommon for three or four locals to divide the produce. Before each pickup, a list of arriving vegetables is posted on the Southside CSA blog, leaving time for members to find suitable recipes or organize impromptu dinner parties.

Southside CSA is unique in that the share has a spicy twist: in keeping with the neighborhood's Latin tradition, the vegetables include several staple ingredients for Mexican meals such as sweet corn, cilantro, and quelites from the Mexican-influenced MimoMex Farm, alongside produce characteristic of the Hudson Valley.

For some, the appeal of Southside lies in the uncertainty of the outcome of the harvest season. While with the payment of the share money there is an expectation that the promised produce will be delivered, nothing is definite. In that way, CSAs offer more than just fresh vegetables, they offer an insight into the farming experience.

Another unique aspect of the CSA system is that there is no set staff aside from the few founding members; instead, it depends on the dedication of its members to volunteer to help with organizing the pick-ups (much like a food co-op). A member-base workforce is what makes Southside so sustainable: by taking care of the distribution and marketing of the incoming goods, the CSA saves busy farmers the burden of worrying about storage and shipping. Standard shift duties include meeting and unloading the produce truck, setting up for fruit and vegetable pickup, and helping distribute the produce to fellow members.

Southside CSA is more than just artichoke heart; it's core members are committed to local outreach and uphold their pledge to fresh food for all by donating leftover pickup vegetables to soup kitchens. Southside CSA has partnered with Craig's Kitchen, a local community action group, that supplies soup kitchens around Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and other Brooklyn neighborhoods. The organization shares the CSA's belief in healthy, organic, and fresh meals for all.

The CSA movement has had incredible momentum, with more than 18 new distribution centers opening just this year in addition to Southside (there were about 50 CSAs in 2008); compared to the NYC Greenmarket, which has 46 locations throughout the boroughs, it seems that the CSA are becoming a favored local destination for fresh food. Not only does a CSA membership provide you with more beets for your buck, but it's also more convenient because chances are there is one right in your neighborhood.

[The Bridge Wine Share, wines exclusively from the Bridge Vineyard of North Fork, Long Island, are $360 full/$180 half. The NY Wine Share, a mix of reds and whites from the various wine-producing regions of the state from Long Island to the Finger Lakes to the Hudson Valley, are $400 full/$200 half. Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture is the ability of a farmer to produce food in such a way that the environment and surrounding ecosystem, is unaffected by their agricultural activities. There are a couple of issues that are connected with this form of agricultural activity which are the biophysical issue and social-economic issue. Biophysical is related to the biological activities such as crop rotation, usage of fertilizers and artificial nutrients and the availability of the other resources such as water, wind and sunlight whereas social-economic is concerned with the employment of farmers, the cost of production and total yield.

Talking about the physical attributes of sustainability, it is not properly understood. Most farming practices show that the end result of these practices has resulted in soil erosion, salination and water-logging. Most forests and tropical areas have lost their fertility due to over-cultivation and conventional farming techniques. These conventional farming techniques are being replaced by sustainable agriculture techniques. These techniques include usage of modern fertilizers, genetically-engineered crops, artificial nutrients and usage of renewable sources of energy.

There are many sustainable techniques for extracting nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium which are essential for plant growth. For nitrogen, we can use nitrogen-fixing bacteria's and the Haber Process to industrially extract nitrogen from the air. As far as phosphorous and potassium are concerned, right amounts of them can be mixed with nitrogen to produce high-yielding fertilizers.

In most areas, rainfall is sufficient to cater the needs of water supply but in other areas irrigation is required. These irrigation systems should be properly utilized in order to make the best use of the water available. Channels should have proper and adequate distribution. Moreover water logging and excessive use of chemicals should be avoided as these lead to salination. Some technologies such as tube wells and water drilling have considerably increased the spread and availability of water.

Natural Resources these days are scarce and bad agriculture practices mean their extinction. Moreover, these habits also contribute a hand to pollution and damage of the ecosystem. Crops at the time of their distribution should be accounted for the sustainability equation. This means that all the expenses of crop production and distribution should be taken in account before doing the final cost benefit analysis.

There is a big debate between different businesses, farmers and scientists on making the agriculture sustainable. One of the few practices can be growing many crops in a single field. This will reduce the loss of nutrients and will eliminate the chance of soil erosion. On the other hand, climatic conditions and water resources will be best utilized. Monoculture is another method that pertains to sustainable agriculture. This process consists of growing only one crop in a field, but it's not highly encouraged because it will result in soil losing it's fertility overtime.

Over-grazing is also one factor that is contributing to soil erosion. This factor's impact can be greatly reduced by introducing a sustainable approach known as grazing management that include dividing grazing area into paddocks which are easy to manage and takes less space.

The sustainable agriculture does affect the overall food yield and it needs to increase because of ever-increasing world population but these techniques sometimes do negatively affect the environment e.g. usage of fertilizers use to eutrophication and burning of forests to clear land for cultivation may lead to carbon dioxide emissions. Some exponents who favour sustainable agriculture agree on using organic farming. Although this technique yields comparatively low but can be used as an alternative in those areas which are drought-pronged. It's an expensive method but if people are educated about the usage of this technique, then there are fair chances that it will be used widely and new techniques will be introduced which will increase the output in future.

Another recent ideas that has flocked in market to achieve sustainability demands the introduction of vertical farms which will isolate the crop from pests, provide full year production and on-site production. Again, cost is the major concern which disallows this sustainable agriculture technique.

We can simply deduce the fact that sustainable agriculture is the need if modern world but considerations are to be made as the implementation of these techniques is not quite feasible and requires some thought. Although, really beneficial this technique still remains a dream for under-developed and developing nations.
