Stay Off of Social Media When Filing Bankruptcy
In the last 10 years there has been a huge growth in Internet technology. Included in this growth has been a phenomenon we know as social media. Just about everyone in the world keeps in touch with family members, friends and past relationships using all of the different forms of social media available. While social media can be fun to keep in touch with all your friends, there is a dark side that could be used against an individual even when filing bankruptcy. Most people's favorite subject is talking about their own lives. Some call it bragging, but we as a whole have become a narcissistic, self indulged nation. Today, many people want to impress people from their past and present. Because of this, these folks tend to embellish the truth of how glamorous their life is. I guess nothing is wrong with showing pictures of your lavish vacation in Hawaii or your brand-new car unless you are planning on filing bankruptcy.
When someone is filing for bankruptcy they should stay off of the computer, especially if they stay in contact with their friends using social media. It's easy for a bankruptcy trustee to get dirt on an individual filing bankruptcy by just using an Internet search engine to find information about that person. You would be surprised how much information you can find out about one's past, present and future plans by using the wide world web. During the process of the bankruptcy filing, the last thing an individual should do is brag about the debts they are wiping out or a vacation they're planning after the bankruptcy discharge.
The last thing a bankruptcy attorney wants to find out is how their client is spending their free time on the Internet. The bankruptcy attorney would be furious to learn about what their client's been saying online if the subject was brought up by the bankruptcy trustee at the 341 meeting. The bankruptcy court requires an individual filing bankruptcy to be totally honest with the court. Even if someone was bragging and lying, there would put a cloud of dishonesty over this individual's head. The trustee would not know if the bankruptcy petition was truthful or was what they found about this person online truthful?
That's why it's best for an individual to throw all their cards on the table and let the bankruptcy attorney do their job. The Internet is a wonderful tool if used properly, but could come back to bite someone if they're not careful. Parents tell their kids all the time to be careful of what they put on the Internet whether it is pictures or something they say on a blog and how it might come back and haunt them later in life. Maybe it's time they take your own advice and go completely dark online until the bankruptcy discharge is complete.
