What is unilateral training? Why is it so important?
-
Unilateral training is any training that involves targeting one side of the body at a time during a movement pattern. Examples of unilateral movements would be like pistol squats or single leg deadlifts .
-
Unilateral training is so important because we all are stronger on one side of our body than the other. We use our dominate side most times so of course that side would be stronger and used more when doing bilateral movements. Even though it’s natural we still want both sides of our body to be symmetrical. The more symmetrical we are the less we compensate on our dominate side. Training unilaterally can help balance out that strength and mobility.

Unilateral training should be and can be done by all skill levels! Check out these two video examples of a modified Pistol Squat and Single Leg deadlift
