Wrapping up my series of test shots with the Sony RX10-ii for now.

The image above was the first of a series of shots taken in the machine gun mode. The RX10-ii has a burst rate than can go up to 960 frames per second in slow motion video, but for still images, it has a burst rate of up to 14 fps at 20.2MP resolution, which is better than a Nikon D4S or Canon 1D X.

Of course, what is not known is how good the AF tracking is on a single subject like a bird in flight – I have not tested that yet, and when I do, I will post some test shots. But at least, the camera did a very good job of maintaining focus on the scene above.

I have some 28 shots from this sequence, which is only about 2 seconds worth of shots, but it is already too impractical to publish them all, either as separate photos or as comments below. So I have uploaded the images as private and put them into an album that anyone interested can access via this link.

At the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, home of the San Francisco 49ers. Preseason game vs. the Dallas Cowboys.

A little football commentary for anyone interested:

The Cowboys have an impressive rookie pass rusher in Randy Gregory, wearing Nº 94, which happens to be the same number worn by Hall of Famer Charles Haley, who played for both the Cowboys and the 49ers, and the only player in history to win five Super Bowl rings.

Here, Gregory gets the better of rookie Offensive lineman for the 49ers, Nº. 68, Patrick Miller. In spite of being held and even pushed to the ground, Gregory manages to keep the pressure on the 49ers Quarterback Blaine Gabbert, forcing the QB to finally scramble.

It's amazing to see how much play occurs in about 2 seconds!

Back to the Sony RX10:

To summarize, the Sony RX10-ii is an outstanding camera, way past entry level DSLRs and many mid-range DSLRs as well. Coupled with the superb Zeiss f/2.8 lens, it delivers an image quality that rivals flagship DSLRs from just 4-5 years ago, such as the Nikon D700.

In addition, the other cutting edge features like in-body image stabilization and 4K video, gives me compelling reasons to think the DSLR is facing extinction. By and large, I think the DSLR, just like the Rangefinder, is finished as a camera paradigm as far as mainstream photography goes.

I have posted a variety of images from the Sony RX10-ii, most at full resolution, that I hope were useful for anyone considering this camera. The Sony RX100-iv also uses the same sensor, and I have posted a number of test shots with the RX100-iv as well, and also a Leica V-LUX Typ 114 / Panasonic FZ1000. Each camera is good in its own way, so anyone interested in any of these cameras should take a look at all three of them.

The only 1" sensor camera not up to snuff is the Nikon 1 V3, but a future V4 model with a better sensor could be a part of this mix, as well.
