Useful Tips On Rottweiler Puppy Training

Useful Tips On Rottweiler Puppy Training

Many people decide to get a Rottweiler for one reason only: To look cool. What they do not realize is that owning a Rottweiler entails a lot of responsibility. After all, having your dog attack your neighbour's pet or worse, your neighbour's child, isn't all that cool. You therefore have to make sure that your dog undergoes proper Rottweiler puppy training. Here are some tips to get you started.

Be The 'Alpha Dog.'

Make sure that your Rottweiler acknowledges you as the Alpha dog. This can be done by turning your dog on his back several times in a day. A Rottweiler considers this to be a very submissive position, which puts you at a superior position leaning over him. You may also take away your dog's food while he is eating and then give it right back a few seconds later. This delivers the message that as Alpha dog, YOU control the food supply. Remember as well that when making eye contact, the Alpha dog NEVER looks away first and NEVER looks down.

Only Praise When Deserved

Effective Rottweiler puppy training also requires that you DO NOT give your dog treats or toys simply because you want to or because he looks cute. These rewards should always be earned and he should always be made to work for it. This helps make them understand that things are not theirs for the taking. Working hard for a reward also makes a Rottweiler feel good about himself.

One of the first commands you should teach during Rottweiler puppy training is "Drop it." This command will help ensure your dog's safety. A Rottweiler is naturally curious, and it will most likely pick up anything that caught its interest. You therefore have to break this habit early on to make sure that he doesn't inadvertently pick up something poisonous.

A Rottweiler is also naturally rambunctious. This trait can be a problem if it prevents him from focusing on your Rottweiler puppy training sessions. In this case, it may be a good idea to exhaust his excess energy first before you begin your training session. Allow your dog to run around a designated area for about an hour; this should be enough time for him to wind down and become more responsive to Rottweiler puppy training.

Crate Training

Crate training is another essential part of Rottweiler puppy training. This will make it easier for you to isolate your dog whenever you have guests or when you have to leave the house for a long period of time. You may begin crate training a Rottweiler by saying, "Crate" and then letting him follow a treat into the crate. After a few days, you can simply leave the treat inside the crate and give the command. Pretty soon, your dog will immediately enter the crate at your command even without the treat.

And here's one very important thing you should know before you start Rottweiler puppy training: This breed of dog is known to test their owners at every opportunity they get. Therefore, you always have to be firm and consistent. Giving in even once will make him feel that he only has to keep trying in order to make you submit to HIS will. Just stick it out and you'll soon reap the rewards of a successful Rottweiler puppy training.
